On the outside it has rugged styling, on the inside, it's spacious and comfortable for quick trips across Basset or long-haul road trips to Roanoke, Pittsburgh or further afield. It's happy to commute in the town or city, but if the pavement runs out or the winter weather does its worst, the Subaru Outback takes it all in its stride.
Some vehicles set the fashion, some vehicles follow the fashion, and others just get on with what they do and do it better than just about anything else. The 2021 Subaru Outback is a compact crossover SUV that fits in the latter category. If you can't decide between an SUV, a sedan, a hatchback or a wagon, you don't have to worry because the Subaru covers all those bases and then some.

A Familiarly individual

If you want a small SUV that looks like it belongs on the set of a big-budget science fiction movie the Outback probably isn't for you. On the other hand, if you want a no-nonsense, practical SUV that can go places a lot of its rivals can't and looks like it was built to fulfill every need you could reasonably have of a vehicle in this class, the Outback is probably the one for you.

It's available in no less than seven different trim levels, so most people are likely to find just the right set of features for them in one of them. The entry-level model in the 2021 Outback lineup is the base Outback, and from there we go up the trims to the Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and finally to the top-of-the-range Touring XT.

All the performance you need and none that you don't

The Outback doesn't pretend to be a high-performance SUV with one of those sporty sloping rooflines and a supercharged engine that makes it a bit of a high-riding weekend track car. The base engine delivers adequate performance and all the capability you need, so you'll never have buyer's regret and think you really should have dug deeper to get the model with the turbo V-8.

A 2.5-liter flat-four is the standard engine in the 2021 Outback that might be familiar because Subaru also uses it in the excellent Forester. The base unit puts out 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels through a superb CVT transmission.

If you'd like extra power and you don't mind using a little extra gas, a 2.4-liter turbo-four is also available for Limited and Touring models and it's also the standard powerplant under the hood of the Onyx. This engine is good for 260 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque, and once again, it goes to all four wheels through that CVT transmission.

Big on features and value

It's easy with some new vehicles to disregard the lower trim levels and assume you'll need to go at least a couple of models up in the range to get more than just the very basics, but that's not the case here. Many buyers will be delighted with what they find standard in the Outback, and it just gets better after that.

Base models come with a full set of power features, cloth upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and twin 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Onyx XT models are an interesting option as they get blacked-out body trim, the uprated engine, and an attractive, durable vinyl interior that's not only soft but also family durable. The Touring XT gets close to genuine luxury with the likes of that turbo-four engine, a front-view camera, cooled and heated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery and the STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Navigation system.
