For the 2021 model year, a new Sport trim level has been added to the lineup that boasts a new powertrain that's been borrowed from the larger Outback and Forester model and brings even more capability to the Crosstrek family.
The Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover SUV with exterior styling that promises a high degree of off-road capability, but it's one that also delivers on those promises. This is far more than a pseudo-off-roader with rugged styling that writes checks its capability can't honor.

Fashionably individual

Today's Crosstrek looks sportier and more contemporary than ever a new bumper cover and wheel designs that make it resemble a smaller version of the Outback, but the Subaru is still proud of its black cladding and the 8.7-inch ground clearance that shows it's not pretending at being a decent off-roader.

Subaru has probably got things just about right here with four different versions of the 2021 Crosstrek to choose from. The entry-level model in this year's lineup is the base Crosstrek, and then the range goes to the Premium, Sport and finally to the range-topping Crosstrek Limited.

The Crosstrek is a vehicle for every occasion, whether you're commuting to Ridgeway during the week or heading north to Smith Mountain Lake for a weekend adventure with the family.

Build the Crosstrek to suit your lifestyle

All CVT-equipped versions of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek come standard with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a rear-seat reminder. All models also come standard with all-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, and a 6.5-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, while Premium models add the likes of heated front seats, two USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an uprated audio system. As well as the uprated engine with an off-road mode and hill descent control, the new Crosstrek Sport models also come standard with synthetic leather upholstery, interior trim accents, keyless access with push-button start, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a sport grille and wheel arch moldings.Crosstrek Limited models certainly live up to their billing with leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone software and uprated headlights.

Big on features and value

If you know anything about Subaru you'd expect the Crosstrek to come standard all-wheel-drive, but that's the starting point for what is a much more capable vehicle than most of its direct rivals. The standard engine under the hood of the 2021 Crosstrek is a 2.0-liter flat-four that puts out 152 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission. If you don't like the idea of a stick-shift, an excellent continuously variable automatic transmission that's genuinely one of the best out there right now is also available.

Subaru has now introduced an alternative engine into the Crosstrek lineup, which is a 2.5-liter flat-four that now provides 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft. of torque and comes mated to that superb CVT transmission. The Crosstrek handles well, partly because it has a relatively low roofline that offsets the high ground clearance and reduces the body roll other SUVs in this class can suffer from. At slower speeds, some Crosstrek models feature an X-Mode off-road button with hill descent control that can automatically apply the brakes of the Crosstrek at speeds of up to 20 mph, while CVT-equipped models also have an SI-Drive, a more responsive "Sport" mode, and an "Intelligent" mode that improves efficiency.

There's also a plug-in hybrid variant that uses the 2.0-liter flat-4 engine, but in this case, it's been tuned to produce 137 horsepower and 134 lb.-ft. of torque. The gas engine is supplemented by a 118 horsepower electric motor that's capable of delivering 17 miles of all-electric range, and although the plug-in Crosstrek weighs almost 500 pounds more, it's still a little faster than a base Crosstrek.

The Crosstrek PHEV is available in a limited number of ZEV states including California. An all-electric version is expected to replace the plug-in hybrid.

Test-drive Subaru Crosstrek in Bassett, VA

A lot of vehicles in this class have rugged styling and are available with all-wheel-drive, but few if any can deliver when the pavement runs out in the way the Subaru Crosstrek can. This really is the ultimate all-rounder in the subcompact crossover SUV segment, and even a top-of-the-line Limited model comes with a very reasonable price for the capability and features it offers.
